Bioremediation opportunities in Valcea County Romania

Abstract:

During the communist era, streams within the forested uplands of the Carpathian Mountains in Vâlcea County, Romania, underwent extensive engineering works that significantly obstructed natural fluvial connectivity. Two inventory missions conducted in the winter and spring of 2026 identified more than ten barriers composed of concrete, stone, and anthropogenic debris.

The physical removal of these barriers is, in isolation, insufficient to restore the good ecological status of the riparian habitats. Comprehensive remediation is required to re-establish nutrient cycling, enrich the riverbeds to support near-natural assemblages of local biota, and decontaminate pollutants sequestered in the sinuous sections and lower reaches of the watercourses.

The primary objectives of this study are to identify the most effective restoration techniques and to delineate critical areas requiring immediate remediation. Following an assessment of water quality and the collection of evidence regarding ecological disturbance, an intervention plan was drafted. This strategy incorporates ecological reconstruction measures, the decommissioning of physical barriers, and a comprehensive stakeholder matrix.
