Rwenzori wheels of Change 2025

In September 2025, ADEMED, in partnership with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), Mbunga Creed Uganda, and a network of local NGOs, proudly hosted one of the largest tree-planting events ever organized in Kasese and Fort Portal. This landmark initiative brought together communities, schools, and international volunteers around a common purpose: to restore fragile ecosystems and safeguard livelihoods in the shadow of the Rwenzori Mountains.

Over the course of the event, we planted 300 Grevillea robusta trees in zones severely affected by deforestation and intensive agriculture. These trees play a critical role in stabilizing soils against landslides, enhancing water retention, and restoring balance to landscapes increasingly vulnerable to climate change. Beyond planting, our work also focused on learning: together with Ruboni community schools, we facilitated seminars on tree planting, geology, biodiversity, and sustainable land use.

A special contribution came from ADEMED international volunteers, who worked hand in hand with local partners to deliver interactive sessions on the importance of trees for soil stability, the value of species diversity in strengthening ecosystem resilience, and the interconnection between geology, water cycles, and community well-being. Their presence demonstrated the power of global solidarity in addressing local environmental challenges.

This first edition of Rwenzori Wheels of Change marks the beginning of a journey. For 2026, we aim to expand to more schools across Kasese and Fort Portal, strengthening environmental education and empowering youth to become guardians of their environment. At the same time, we will launch a community collection-box program in local supermarkets, creating a channel of solidarity between urban and rural areas. Through this initiative, we will mobilize donations of non-perishable food, supplements, medicines, school supplies, and footwear, which will be distributed to vulnerable households around Rwenzori Mountains National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park.

At ADEMED, we believe that sustainable change is rooted in partnership, education, and community action. Together with our allies and friends, we are rolling forward — towards a greener, safer, and fairer tomorrow for the people and ecosystems of Uganda.

We warmly thank Katya Kule Zaburon and his dedicated team for their beautiful organization, commitment, and tireless efforts that made this event possible.
